Blast from the Past

Dad and I spent several hours yesterday scanning old photos. Hopefully we will continue to do this until all of our photos are on the computer. This has always been one of my favorite pictures. Vaari spent Christmas with us the first year we were married. He was called to speak for Christmas Services. (Can you believe we use to have a visiting minister every year at Christmas?!) Since he was my Grandpa we were lucky to have him stay with us. I remember when this picture was taken. Grandpa H. and Vaari were visiting in Finn. I don't remember who was telling the story and who was doing the listening but you can see the enjoyment in their faces. I was wishing I could understand Finn!
Our first Christmas. I was expecting Jennifer. Grandpa H. made us the magazine bucket in the background. We still use it. Danny was looking at this picture and said, "I hate to tell you this Dad, but you look......kind of different." Dad says, 'I do? Does Mom?" He says, "No, just you." We got a chuckle out of that but we think it's because Dad has a headful of hair!
Here you go, Jen. Your first Christmas. Check out your toys carefully. You might find them in the "antique" shops!

What happened to dad's tree stand? I forgot all about it!

I was busy inspecting the decor and surrounding objects in the top pictures. I can't wait to see more!

I keep thinking that I might have that print of the mill (on the left)... I can't remember. I know I picked that one or a similar one up because it felt familiar to me. :)

That *is* a great picture of Vaari and Grandpa! And Danny's comment made me laugh. "I hate to tell you this Dad..." I can just hear him.

So, how's it feel that you haven't changed in 30 years? ;)

Look at you Mom, all stylish and stuff. I can see Kaitlin prancing around in that same dress and long sleeve shirt if you had kept it! ha ha!

We always thought Fred looked like he belonged on Dukes of Hazard... he had a cool car, cool hair.

Oh this is so neat, I didn't know either of you then. Oh my gosh Fred's hair; was it like a pageboy style or no? And Danny is so funny; he should start his own blog.

Oh, and Dear Vaari, remember that column in the Greetings of Peace.
He was a dear man. I remember once going to "busy bees" in the U.P. at Eva's house [did she live w/ Vaari for awhile] one night, our project was knitting mittens. And Vaari sat on the floor w/ us girls, straight back, both legs straight out in front of him; he must have been pretty spry. I don't remember his wife however. \
And to think he had to leave his family to keep services elsewhere, but that's how it was done then I suppose.

Yvonne, Eva lived with Vaari always, I think. Yes, Vaari was very spry and agile. I remember when he was a little younger and he would stand on his head and do other stunts for us. My Grandma died when I was about 10.

Gosh, I am sure Grandpa H. would of been in his glories if he were alive today to see just how big his family is now. He was always fun to have around. When Grandma had alheimzers he would always say "I can chew nails and spit rust" or "I'm going to raise this roof" and she would repeat like a parrot, "raise the roof already". Its hard to believe they have been gone for so long already.
